What I Learned From a Sappy Ed Sheeran Song

When I was a teenager, I loved me a sappy love song or rom-com. As I’ve gotten older, this has faded in light of, well– reality. I hate that rom-coms end at the marriage proposal. That’s only the beginning!

It’s not that I don’t believe in magical love; it’s just that I’ve realized love is so much deeper and wider than that initial spark.

A while ago, my daughter and I were sitting on the porch, orange juice and coffee in hand, respectively. We did our usual thing: discussed the birds, talked about the people who walked by and reviewed why papa lives at his house, not ours. I had my Lennon &Maisy station playing on my Bluetooth speaker when all the sudden an Ed Sheeran song came on that made me freeze.

The lyrics went:

Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own
We are still kids, but we’re so in love
Fighting against all odds
I know we’ll be alright this time

Darling, just hold my hand
Be my girl, I’ll be your man
I see my future in your eyes

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song

When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful
I don’t deserve this, darling,
you look perfect tonight

Normally, a song this sappy would have made me roll my eyes and hit skip. But in that moment, I practically teared up.

Why?

Because no matter your age or how long you’ve been married, we all desire someone to look at us and say ‘perfect.’

In the imperfections of our lives and marriage and kids, there can be a tendency to harden our hearts to the amazing rush of pure love and to almost say ‘good enough,’ especially when it comes to our marriages. But sometimes to enrich our love and spark that romance, we’ve got to return (if only for a moment)… to the beginning.

We’ve got to be able to admit that romantic love, even in its early, sappy stages is just remarkable. Every once in a while, there should be moments with your love- when you look at each other and allow yourself to feel like you are teenagers, dancing in the dark.

HAPPY EARLY VALENTINES’ DAY!
