Are You Living the Life You Want to Live, Mama?

Do you ever feel like you are always working and never getting enough done? Are you always running ragged by the end of the week? Are you always late and never as emotionally present as you want to be with your family?

I haven’t met many moms that DON’T feel this way– at least at some point.

For years, I’ve been striving to do more and be better– to rise above my health issues and “keep up” with the world, the demands of my life and my kid.

And it’s ALWAYS left me wanting.

About a year and a half ago, I read the New York Times Bestseller: *Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less– by Greg McKeown.

And it rocked my world.

Essentialism is the idea that in order to live life well, we must narrow our focus. We must do only “the right things”– those things that allow us to make our maximum impact on our world.

It’s The Idea of Doing:

If you don't prioritize your life, someone else will.

I was magnetically drawn to this concept from the second I read it, but I found it enormously difficult to bridge the gap between the concepts of the book and the realities of daily mom life.

Over the past year and a half, I’ve been tinkering with the ideas in the book and doing little experiments to practice the idea of “less but better.” Some of my attempts have failed, while others have been enormously successful.

For the month of October, I am launching my first-ever series at Room for Joy, called “Simple Mama.”

Together we will explore the idea of living simpler, more focused lives– in practical ways. Don’t be fooled, mama– simple doesn’t mean easy. In many ways, living simply takes way more effort than living in “default mode.”

However, after reading Essentialism, I’m convinced that there is a more fulfilling way to do this “mom thing” in such a way that I don’t feel like I’m in survival mode all the time. I believe there is a way to live a life–not devoid of stress– but with more space for joy.

And I’m on a journey to find it.
