If You Have 7 minutes, You Can Do This

It’s February, which means gyms are about to get empty again and the New Year–with all it’s hopes and resolutions are fading in the light of real life. Will you fade with them?

I truly believe that if we want to live out our lives as moms with a huge helping of joy, we must make goals and keep them. In order to do this, we must reshape our habits, which is no small thing.

So, let’s talk exercise.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m no stranger to failure when it comes to exercise goals. I’m not overly-athletic to begin with and then there’s my Lyme disease, which can flare with any sort of movement, even walking.

All of this to say, I often find myself giving up in the face of physical limitations, rather than meeting my personal best.

When it comes to exercise, I’ve learned I need a plan– something to do to kick me back into gear when I’ve fallen off the exercise wagon. (Notice I said when, not if). For me, that is the 7-minute workout.

Have you ever tried one of these? The idea behind the 7-minute workout is to do a short workout of high intensity activities, with 10-second rests in between. It’s the perfect place to start, when you need to kick into gear with exercise.

Everyone (including moms) has 7 minutes a day for exercise. No excuses.

2. You don’t have to wait til naptime.

You can do this workout any time, anywhere– even while your kids play.

3. You can adapt the workout to your skill level.

Most 7-minute apps allow you to set your skill level. Even on “easy”, I struggle because of my Lyme, which is why I adapt the exercises to my needs. For instance, I can’t do push-ups, so I do plank instead.

4. It requires little to no equipment.

At most, you need a chair or a wall. I think you can make that work, mama. 🙂

5. It’s free.

Take “cost” off your exercise excuse list.

6. It gives pace and rhythm.

The best thing about these workout apps is that they provide pacing and instructions on proper form so you don’t hurt yourself.

7. It works.

It’s weird to say, but 7 minutes actually makes a difference in my body tone! You wouldn’t think it would, but it honestly does. Skeptical? Here’s an article on the New York Times blog that explains why 7-minute workouts are effective.

Let’s be honest, 7-minute workouts are a bit boring, which is why you shouldn’t stay there. However, it’s the PERFECT springboard into whatever form of exercise you enjoy. It’s all about forming a habit, mama.
