The Secret Freedom of Accepting Limits

1

{You CAN’T Do It All, Mama. And that’s actually okay}.

We all have the same amount of time in our day— whether you are the President or a stay-at- home mom.

I don’t know about you, but I’m always tempted to add just one more thing to my day, as though my energy and resources aren’t limited.*Essentialism has taught me a simple, but profound truth that I’ve known in my mind for quite sometime, but have come to accept in my heart recently:

I can’t do it all.

I wish I could, but I can’t.

When we really accept this in our heart of hearts, it clarifies the truths we discussed in the last post:

*Every time I say yes to something, I am saying no to something else.

*Every time I say no to something, I am freeing myself up to other possibilities—- more in line with your true goals.

(*These are Greg McKeown quotes, paraphrased).

At first this can feel limiting– depressing almost. But if we can accept this as moms, it will free us up to protect ourselves from other’s agendas for our time and energy.

So let me ask you this question:

Do you really want those precious & limited resources to be run by other people’s agendas?

Remember these wise words:

1

Have you taken time to realize what this means for us in our job as moms?

This means that by saying no to doing “just one more thing” for the PTA, you are saying yes to being available to your kids or your husband.

This means we can say no to cleaning the bathroom (occasionally), so that we can say yes to a spontaneous beach day with the family.

This means saying no to one more freelance job is saying yes to the sleep you need to be rested and present for your kids.

It means we get to choose our own lives.

If we can accept this truth, it will set us free to live in line with our highest contribution, not at the mercy of guilt and the lie that we can “do it all.”

Because the truth is, you really can’t.

Still not sure how this applies to your life right now?

Stay tuned for the next post on how all of this “simple mama” stuff can radically improve your day.
